Are you a left or right navigator?

I think a lot about navigation and layout issues today. One of the main question is the basic layout. I don’t yet know if i need 3 columns (left and right for sidebars, center for the content) or if 2 are enough. I tend to think 2 are better.

Let’s say 2 are enough – what would you prefer? Do you prefer a sidebar to the left or to the right. I would call right sidebars the modern way – didn’t see so much of them before i saw blogs. But SimpleSnip isn’t a blog…

so what?

The social definition

I talked about SimpleSnip beeing a social community. In some jabber talks during the last days i noticed that this little word “social” leads to misconceptions about what SimpleSnip will be.

When talking about a social community there’s nothing like a totally profile based social network like Xing, LinkedIn or one like those. The primary focus on SimpleSnip is the content that comes from the users. The social aspect is the fact users share their content with other users and each one benefits from the content of others.

Just wanted to clarify this – i’ll blog a bit more about what SimpleSnip will be soon.

Invitation on SimpleSnip and Joost

Thought a lot about invitations during the last days. Primarly whether it’s good to start with a minimal team of testers and grant them invitations or just do some beta testing and then open all the doors.

It’s not easy to decide as each way has its benefits and i think i’ll have to meditate a bit more about that stuff. Probably also talking to some guys about that topic would be great. What do you think? What’s your position on that topic?

…but while thinking about invitations i got the possibility to give away some ;) I just received the actual Joost news announcing Version 0.9 of the windows client and granting me 5 more invitation tokens. I thought i’ll giv’em my first readers on the project blog.

Joost anyone?

Sorry, Joost invites are sold out! ;)

Name & Domain

Yesterday was naming day. I’m not the one who breeds over a project name for 4 weeks. I had a longer skype call with Nils about some stuff around the project and we also brainstormed the project name. After some 30 minutes braining around we had 4 names left:

  • Snipadoo
  • Sniplia
  • AnySnip
  • SimpleSnip

After our phone call i weight up some arguments and could get rid of two of them. So i only had “Snipadoo” and “SimpleSnip” left. I had to decide between the modern, hip, funny, web2.0 name and the one that is more simple, straight and easy to understand/write.

Finally – you probably guessed that – i chose the simple one, the name that one really knows how to write upon first hearing: SimpleSnip. I think it was a good decision. I would of couse loved to have names like snippr or something but you don’t get any domains for the real smart names out there unless you’re willing to pay big numbers. As the project is started with a very low budget this was no option.

Btw: about 90% of the already taken domain names i checked during the last days were just registered and parked. It’s annoying.

But now i got a name, i got the domain and i’m happy with it. While writing this post i’m setting up the domain on the server and after that the party starts. Some basic software setup and all that stuff, you know.

What’s up here?

What’s going on? I’m going to build a social community. Something that’s not there until now and I thought it may be useful. And i’d like you to take part in my steps.

First of all sorry for my bad english. I was born in Germany over 30 years ago and have always lived here. So my english is based on some basic school english and some holiday trips around europa and australia.

This blog aims to give you an idea what i’m working on and how the project is doing. I’d like to give you an idea of a one-man-show in web 2.0. It’s running on WP.com just because i’d like to have it independend from the main project server and software and i don’t want to worry about keeping a project blog up2date, spam free and all that stuff.

My private main blog is currently available in German language only – you’ll find it here.

Okay that’s all for now – i’ll do some more setup here on the blog, will have a closer look at the possiblities here to make it a bit more beautiful and then continue working on the project.
