Registrierungen jetzt öffentlich

Nachdem das System nun ein paar Tage im Read-Only-Modus öffentlich lief sind die Registrierungen nun öffentlich Verfügbar. Für eingeladene Benutzer gibt es natürlich weiterhin Credits. Die neue FAQ gibt auch erste Auskunft über die derzeit vergebenen Credits.

Im Laufe der nächsten Stunden und Tage folgt noch eine übersichtliche Auflistung der diversen Feeds. Bisher sind diese nur auf den jeweiligen Seiten über die Browser-URL-Leiste zu erreichen.

Im Hintergrund laufen auch schon die ersten Planungen für die nächsten neuen Features. Demnächst dann mehr dazu. Jetzt aber erstmal viel Spaß mit SimpleSnip. Bei Fragen und Problemen steht jederzeit das integrierte Forum zur Verfügung.

SimpleSnip jetzt public – Einladungen werden verteilt!

Seit ca. 2 Stunden ist SimpleSnip für die Öffentlichkeit erreichbar. Derzeit ist unter http://simplesnip.com nur gucken erlaubt – anfassen noch nicht Die Registrierung ist derzeit nur mit einer Einladung möglich. Zum Start haben alle Beta-Tester jeweils 5 Einladungen bekommen die sie in den nächsten Tagen hoffentlich verteilen werden. Damit soll ein langsam Wachstum von SimpleSnip gewährleistet werden. Kleinere Fehler die den Weg durch den Betatest gefunden haben, können dann einfacher und mit weniger Schaden behoben werden.

Sobald sich zeigt, dass auch mit mehr Aktivität alles rund läuft geht es richtig an den Start und die Registrierung wird dann für alle möglich sein.

Last Minute testing

Bald ist es soweit, dann wird SimpleSnip den Schritt in die Öffentlichkeit machen. Im ersten Schritt kann dann aber erstmal öffentlich gelesen werden. Für die ersten Neuregistrierungen wird noch eine Einladun nötig sein. Das hat den einfachen Hintergrund, dass ich evtl. noch vorhandene Fehler vor einem größeren Ansturm bewahren will. Mit Einladungen ist das ganze am Anfang etwas kontrollierter.

Für die letzten Tage vor dem Release wär’s schön, wenn sich noch ein paar fleißige Händchen finden, die SimpleSnip schon mal mit ersten Inhalten füttern. Die Testinhalte, die nur zum Bugfixing gut waren, fliegen in kürze raus und damit SimpleSnip nicht ganz leer an den Start gehen will, geht heute Abend nochmal ein Schwung Einladungen raus.

Wer also gerne vorab schon mal einen Blick werfen und SimpleSnip fleissig füttern will, ist herzlich eingeladen und darf dann beim release selbst einladen.

Intensivtester gesucht

Die ersten Tests bei SimpleSnip verlaufen besser als gedacht. Es sind bisher nur wenige Fehler aufgetaucht, die auch direkt korrigiert werden konnten.

Um vor dem nächsten Schritt sicher fehlerfrei zu sein suche ich noch ein paar Intensivtester die das System in jeder einzelnen Funktion auf Herz und Nieren testen wollen. Primär geht es dabei darum die Basisfunktionen von SimpleSnip oft genug in allen Facetten auszuprobieren um evtl. versteckte Fehler und Probleme zu entdecken.

Wer mitmachen will meldet sich bitte kurz hier in den Kommentaren. Der nächste Schwung Einladungen geht heute im Laufe des Tages raus.

Was ist eigentlich SimpleSnip?

SimpleSnip ist eigentlich ein richtiges Ego-Projekt. Die Idee dazu entstand aus purem Eigennutz. Immer wieder fehlte mir bei meinen Wegen durch’s Netz eine passende Möglichkeit Informationsschnipsel zu archivieren. Da findet man z.B. nach langer Suche endlich die Anleitung ein längst nervendes Problem beim Lieblingssoftwareprdukt loszuwerden. Nach der nächsten Neuinstallation des Computers oder nur der Software selbst braucht man die Information spätestens wieder. Der Bookmark führt mittlerweile in’s Leere, da die Seite nicht mehr existiert und die Suche nach der Information bei Google & Co. beginnt von vorne.

Genau dafür kann SimpleSnip eine Lösung sein. “Kann”, da die Art der Verwendung von SimpleSnip durch einzelne nicht festgelegt ist. Jeder macht aus SimpleSnip das, was es für ihn ist. Die Basis bietet eine zentrale Informationsablage mit sozialem Charakter.

Komplett

SimpleSnip ist technisch gesehen ein Zwischenstück zwischen Social Bookmarking-Plattform und Bloghoster. Es dient der Ablage von Informationen in einzelnen Beiträgen. Diese Beiträge heißen Snips und werden mit Schlagwörtern (Tags) zum späteren leichten Auffinden archiviert. Zusätzlich haben Gäste und andere Benutzer die Möglichkeit die Beiträge positiv oder negativ zu bewerten, User verknüpfen sich mit anderen Usern über die Buddyliste, kommunizieren per Privatnachricht und Sammeln Credits.

Einfach

SimpleSnip setzt den Fokus auf Einfachheit. Es soll für jeden ohne große technische Vorkenntnisse bedienbar sein. Ein Grund dafür warum das Design der Website eher schlicht gehalten ist und Navigationselemente auffällig gestaltet wurden. Zum schnellen und einfachen posten von neuen Snips steht ein Bookmarklet zur Verfügung mit dem der neue Snip in wenigen Sekunden erstellt ist. Alle weiteren Angebote innerhalb von SimpleSnip sind optional und für die Basisnutzung nicht nötig.

SimpleSnip ist selbstverständlich kostenlos – was auch sonst

So nun ist es raus und ich hoffe ich bin nicht der einzige der Bedarf dafür hat.

German testing starts soon

Good news today. Things are getting a bit more in motion during the last days. The final decision to start in german only is made and we may start testing by the end of the week.

As the first steps of SimpleSnip will be german there will also be some german blog posts during this time. To make it a bit easier for non-german-speakers i added two categories: English and German. You may select one of them within the sidebar on the right to only see posts in the language of your choice.

Still no testing so far

Unfortunately currently SimpleSnip moves a bit slower than i expected it to move. That primarly depends on the multilingual part. Basically everything worked so far but a one little step before the testing could start i found a rather big problem related to multilanguage and tagging.

As the problem seem to be unsolvable for the moment i decided to probably start with a single-language interface. As i’m a native german speaker and most of my friends and collegues are german this would also probably be the language to start with. This isn’t really satisfactory but couldn’t be changed easily. I hope to be able to add english as the second language as soon as possible.

The next week will most likely be filled with building all the multilingual stuff back and cleaning up the interface. I hope we could start testing really soon now. SimpleSnip should be about to get started soon.

Testing SimpleSnip

It will only take us a few days until we can enter the testing period at SimpleSnip. What does this mean? ‘Testing period’ means the whole testing from the moment i open the Site for a small number of testers unto what we call “final”. In this period there will be some more phases where each of them marks different milestones:

phase 1 (closed alpha): about 80% of the features planned for final are already working without big errors. Phase 1 is primarly to quickly find the bigger and important bugs and fix them asap and also add the remaining feature set and probably point out some important new features.
phase 2 (closed beta): features are complete. In phase 2 the small beta team (normally not bigger than the alpha team) does intensive testing to find all remaining bugs. No new features are added in this phase (normally *g*).
phase 3 (closed beta): new beta testers are invited to fix the next round of bugs. During this phase the beta team may continuesly grow based on system reasearch. This phase is important for performance tests. We will probably switch to a read-only open version so guests can already read what the beta testers post to the system but can not register themselves for the site.
phase 4 (open beta): this is the phase where we open the system for registration at invite everyone to take part. The “beta” makes not really much difference to the final stage but only shows we’re still in a early phase of living and kinda strange things may happen – but of course shouldn’t. This “beta” will probably not be in the logo and shouldn’t take too long also – i give it a maximum of 4 weeks.

Unfortunately i can’t give a prediction already how long the complete testing will take but i think this shouldn’t be more than 3-4 weeks + phase 4.

Design day – inspired by the sun

Probably most of you (at least the german readers) probably enjoy a day out in the sun today. For me the good weather brought some nice inspiration. I did a big step in css stuff today and also integrated the logo draft into the templates for the first time today. It’s still messy and lot’s of work to do but the hardest step is done and the basic layout should be called fixed today.

To give you kind of an impression what SimpleSnip will look like here’s a logo shot (still maybe changed):

Note: I’m not a designer so the logo shouldn’t blow you away Anyway, SimpleSnip won’t be a design contest so this should be okay – at least for the beginning.

Is SimpleSnip a human aggregator?

I skyped a bit about SimpleSnip today and had some brainstorming hours – first with others and some lonely ones after.

After thinking a lot about what features SimpleSnip could use when starting and what features could be added later, i thought a bit about positioning the new baby at the market. Copycats do have the great advantage that they don’t have to think about that stuff theirselves. They just copy the explanation and description of their service and tune it a bit probably. When you try to innovate something new (though SimpleSnip won’t be the reinnovation of the wheel) you have to spend hours in thinking about the first 5 sentences a visitors get’s to read when stepping by at your site. You have to find the real best words to describe your service. Otherwise the visitor might not get the point, click away and you lost him – at least for the first round.

So i thought about this basic communication part, and it came to my mind that SimpeSnip could be something like a human aggregator though it probably wouldn’t be what you think when you hear “human aggregator”. Kinda cluttering, huh?
